On 25 May 2022, Haiyang SHI successfully defended his double doctorate Doctor of Science: Geography (UGent) and Doctorate of Science: Cartography and Geographic Information System (University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences). De title of his research was Water resources utilization and soil salinization in the Aral Sea Basin. The supervisors were the professors Tim Van de Voorde, Piet Termonia, Philippe De Maeyer (UGent) en Geping Luo (XIEG, Chinese Academy of Sciences).
