This project aims to study the drought characteristics in the arid zones of Central Asia. In the first step, drought is identified and characterized based on different drought indices (e.g. the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI)). The basic drought characteristics are studied by using the traditional Run theory method. A drought identification and characteristics description system are developed based on a 3-dimensional clustering algorithm to capture the dynamic feature of drought events. The second part focuses on the evaluation of satellite-based precipitation products based on a new-promoted error component evaluation system to provide better guidance to select appropriate products. The final one concentrates on the application of remote sensing for the agricultural drought monitoring based on multiple remote sensing variables.
