Etefa Guyassa successfully defends his PhD

On Friday 22 September Etefa Guyassa successfully defended his PhD entitled "Hydrological response to land cover and management (1935-2014) in a semi-arid mountainous catchment of northern Ethiopia”. His research, with BOF scholarship, was supervised by Prof. dr. Jan Nyssen and Dr. Amaury Frankl of the Department of Geography as well as Prof. dr. Jean Poesen of Leuven University. He used aerial photographs, which had been taken during the 1930s and compared them to Google Earth images so as to detect changes to land use and soil water conservation in a 5000 km² catchment. A runoff model was constructed and validated that allowed to contrast the current interventions against a “business as usual scenario”.
