Science and policy interactions resulted in a success story for land restoration in Ethiopia

Since many years, UGent’s Department of Geography carries out joint research projects with Mekelle University, in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia, in relation to soil erosion, land degradation and conservation activities. This research is aimed at supporting the efforts that are undertaken by local communities for land rehabilitation. This research work, involving many researchers, MSc and PhD students has resulted in about 100 scientific publications. But more importantly, the rehabilitation activities are efficient and contribute to the people’s livelihood. As a flagship for good governance, the region now received the 2017 Future Policy Gold Award from the World Future Council. More information here: and with Prof. Dr. Jan Nyssen.
