Launch of PhD research on the impact of large dams in Ethiopia

A research project on Systemic analysis of dam-driven transitions of downstream alluvial plains in Ethiopia has been launched in January 2017 by exploratory field visits along the Beles and Tekezze Rivers in Ethiopia. Here, PhD student Sofie Annys and Prof. Jan Nyssen as well as Dr. Tesfaalem Ghebreyohannes (Mekelle University and alumnus of UGentís Department of Geography) are pictured in front of the Tekezze river, downstream from a major hydropower dam. There is now a steady flow, even in the dry season, the alluvial plain has been occupied by dozens of banana plantations, and large parts of the bed of the previously braided river are getting abandoned by the river and may soon start to be cropped.
