Prof. Dr. Philippe De Maeyer

Prof. Philippe De Maeyer (°Gent, 1955) is since 2008 full professor in cartography and GIS at Ghent University and head of the Department of Geography. Philippe De Maeyer joined Ghent University in 1999 as lecturer and senior lecturer (2002). Before he worked during 12 years as manager of a GI and cartography department in a private company. From 1981 tot 1987 he was lecturer at the University of Constantine (Algeria) and Ghent University in the framework of the Belgian cooperation.

In 1976 he obtained his Master degree in Geography at Ghent University, whereafter he continued his studies at Bordeaux University (France) as fellow of the French Government and obtained a postgraduate diploma in Geology and Marine Applications and a certificate in Applied Geophysics in 1977. He obtained his Doctorate in 1980 with a subject on applied marine geophysics. He is holder of the Aggregation Higher Secondary Education (1986, Ghent) and of the Certificate of Fundamental Cognition of French for Managing and Teaching Educational Staff (Ministère de l'Education Nationale,1986). He passed in 1992 a certificate in Business Economy (Antwerp) and holds different credits in informatics (1976 - 1987). Between 1978 and 1981 he was assistant at the Laboratory of Physical Geography at Ghent University.

Presently he is chair of the Scientific Board of the Belgian National Mapping Agency (NGI) and chair of the Commission WT8 Earth and Space Sciences of Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO). He is also full member of the GDI-council (Flemish governmental advising council on geographical data infrastructure) and chair of the Belgian sub-commission on cartography (Belgian National Committee of Geography). He is also chair of the ICA Commission on Map Production and Economics. Since 2011 he is chair of the Belgian National Committee of Geography.

He was member of the International Scientific Advisory Council of RGI (Space for Geo-Information) and the Review Committee. Besides teaching at Ghent University he was or is also involved in several courses and doctoral schools in South-Africa, France, China, Russia,... concerning map production quality assurance and management of GI production. He was chair or member of three evaluation boards of education quality assurance (Netherlands and Belgium).

At the national and international level he was promotor of, adviser for or was involved in different projects in cartography and GIS (see research project list).

In Ghent he is teaching courses in cartography, geographical information systems, GI management and historical cartography.
