On June 21st 2016 Lien Dupont successfully defended her PhD entitled ‘Take a look at the landscape! An eye-tracking study of landscape observation and its influencing factors’. In her PhD, Lien used eye-tracking to analyse how people observe landscapes represented on photographs. Three main influencing factors, expected to determine the viewing behavior, were examined: the properties of the photographs, the characteristics of the landscape and the characteristics of the observer. In addition, a method for visual impact assessment of new constructions was developed. The dissertation is a theoretical contribution to landscape perception research in general but it also offers a practical application for landscape planning and design in specific.
